Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple

Experiences_ Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple
6-Min Walk from Hostel

Just a short walk away, Gangaramaya Temple is one of Colombo's most striking landmarks — a striking mix of Sri Lankan, Thai, and Chinese architecture, filled with golden Buddha statues, a sacred Bodhi tree, and decades of artefacts donated by devotees. It's a quick, peaceful escape from the city and one of the best photo stops nearby.

Experiences_ Colombo City Centre Mall (1)
5-Minute Walk from the Property

When the midday heat gets to be too much, Colombo City Centre Mall is right around the corner, a modern, multi-story complex with over 50 local and international brands, a spacious food court running from Sri Lankan curries to global fast food, a basement supermarket for stocking up on snacks, and a full cinema for when you want a few hours of air conditioning and a good film. The upper floors open up to views over Beira Lake, making it an easy spot to browse, eat, or just cool off before heading back out.

Experiences_ Galle Face Beach
5-10 Minute Tuk-Tuk Ride (2 km)

This oceanfront promenade is where Colombo shows up every evening — locals flying kites, families walking the seafront, and the Indian Ocean breeze cutting through the day's heat. Along the water, a row of street food stalls serves up isso wade (crispy lentil fritters topped with fried prawns) and king coconut, perfect for sipping as the sun drops into the water.

Experiences_ Lotus Tower
10-12 Minute Tuk-Tuk Ride (3.1 km)

Rising 356 metres over the city, Lotus Tower is the tallest structure in South Asia — and one of Colombo's most unmistakable landmarks after dark, when it lights up in shifting colour. The 29th-floor observation deck delivers a full 360° view over the city and the Indian Ocean, best timed for sunset, with a revolving restaurant and a digital art museum on the ground floor for those who want to make an evening of it.

Experiences_ Port City
10-15 Minute Tuk-Tuk Ride (3.4 km)

Built on reclaimed land jutting into the Indian Ocean, Port City is Colombo's newest stretch of coastline — and its evenings belong to the beach clubs and restaurants lining the water. Settle in at Bellevue Beach Club for beachfront dining and sunset cocktails, grab a seat at The Beach Park or Via 9 for a meal with an ocean view, or just walk the man-made beach as jet skis and banana boats cut through the water offshore. A different side of Colombo entirely — modern, open, and built for slow evenings by the sea.

Experiences_ Independence Square
15-25 Minute Walk (or a Quick Tuk-Tuk)

This open-air stone pavilion marks Sri Lanka's independence from British rule in 1948, built in the style of the old Kandyan royal audience hall, with stone lion carvings guarding its entrance. Surrounded by lawns and shaded walking paths, it's one of Colombo's most popular spots for an evening jog, a slow stroll, or simply sitting and watching the city go by, free to enter, any time of day.

Experiences_ The National Museum
5-10 Minute Tuk-Tuk Ride

Housed in a 19th-century Italianate colonial building, Sri Lanka's National Museum holds the island's history in one place — royal regalia, the jewel-encrusted throne of the last King of Kandy, centuries-old stone carvings, and historic weaponry. The grounds outside, shaded by old banyan trees, are worth a slow walk in their own right.

Note: closed on Mondays, open 9 AM–5 PM the rest of the week.

Experiences_ One Galle Face Mall
10-15 Minute Tuk-Tuk Ride

Colombo's largest mall, and one of its most polished — four floors of international brands, a busy food court, and a PVR cinema for when you want a few hours of air conditioning. Head up to the 6th floor as evening sets in for ocean views and a drink while the sun goes down, then wind down at the small beachside amusement park along the promenade below.

Experiences_ Royal Colombo Golf Club
15-20 Minute Tuk-Tuk Ride (3.3 km)

One of Colombo's oldest and most respected golf clubs, set on manicured grounds in the middle of the city. It's members-only, but guests can visit for a round, a lesson with the resident coaches, or simply lunch on the veranda — think a mocktail and a home-style Sri Lankan meal while watching the greens. A quieter, more refined side of Colombo, worth it even for non-golfers looking for a relaxed afternoon.

Experiences_ Beira Lake & Seema Malaka
8-Minute Walk from the Property

A short walk from Gangaramaya Temple, Seema Malaka is a meditation pavilion floating on Beira Lake, designed by Sri Lanka's most celebrated architect, Geoffrey Bawa, and run as a satellite site of the temple next door. Wooden walkways connect rows of Buddha statues set against Colombo's modern skyline — a striking contrast, and one of the most photographed quiet spots in the city. Best visited in the late afternoon, once the heat eases and the lights begin to reflect across the water.

Signature Experiences

Vintage Jeep Tour of Colombo

Tour the city in a lineup of genuine classic jeeps — a Land Rover Series I, a WWII-era Willys MB, an M38A1 from the Vietnam War era, and Willys CJ-6/CJ-8 models once favored by former U.S. President Ronald Reagan. Choose a 3-hour ride (up to 6 guests) with unlimited drinks, street food, and free entry to sights along the way, or go for the full 7-hour tour with a seafood lunch in Mount Lavinia, a beach or pool swim, and evening tea at the historic Mount Lavinia Hotel.

Colombo's History on Foot

A 9 AM guided walk through the heart of Colombo, starting near the produce markets behind the Old Town Hall. Your host traces the city's history — Arab traders, colonial powers, and the rise of the "Pearl of the Indian Ocean" — through hidden landmarks, colonial-era architecture, and bustling streets, ending at the Dutch Hospital precinct, where old Colombo gives way to its modern skyline and café culture.
